Put simply, veterinary internal medicine is about taking care of the inside of your pet. This discipline involves investigating, treating and preventing disease, and we use both medical and surgical treatments to help pets suffering from internal diseases.
Here at Paragon Veterinary Referrals, we are proud of our purpose-built facility, fitted with the latest technologies and equipment to provide the highest level of care for our patients. Whether your pet is suffering from an on-going condition like diabetes or a short-term ailment like acute diarrhoea, we can help.
The internal medicine team work closely with the soft tissue surgeons to provide a holistic service for your pet. Some common conditions referred to our internal medicine department include:
- Diabetic patients
- Nasal conditions
- Chronic diarrhoea
- Weight loss
- Blood problems
- Pets with an internal condition can expect to have a 20 – 60 minute consultation with our veterinary internal medicine practitioners.
- We will take a thorough history from you and examine your pet carefully, trying to answer any questions you may have and suggest ways to investigate and treat your pet’s problem. We will always discuss potential costs, outcomes and risks, including complications.
- Assuming you have agreed to treatment, your pet may need to be left with us for immediate investigation and treatment. We aim to send most internal medicine cases home on the same day. If this is not appropriate, we have extensive hospitalisation facilities to care for your pet during his or her stay.
Andrea Holmes

Specialist in Internal Medicine
EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine
Andrea is a European Specialist in Internal Medicine and has experience of working within clinics both in the UK and Australia. Andrea graduated from the University of Bristol in 2011 and worked in small animal practice prior to completing an internship at Davies Veterinary Specialists in Hertfordshire. She then completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Bristol in 2017 and went on to achieve her diploma in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Since then, Andrea has worked at The Animal Health Trust in Suffolk and also at the internationally renowned SASH (Small Animal Specialist Hospital) in Sydney.
In her spare time, sport is high on her list of priorities with a passion for basketball and taking part in triathlons. Andrea has previously represented England with the Youth Basketball team between 2000 and 2002, starring in tournaments in Hungary and Italy. Andrea is also learning to play the ukulele!
Adam Bell

Internal Medic and Cardiologist
Adam graduated from Bristol in 1992. He spent 10 years in small animal practice in the Bristol area before moving to Calder Vets in Dewsbury in 2002. Adam received his Certificate in Veterinary Cardiology in 2002.
As well as cardiology, his interests include all aspects of Internal Medicine, particularly ultrasonography, guided biopsy techniques and endoscopy. He received his certificate in Internal Medicine in 2006.
Jane Scott

Advanced Practitioner (Internal Medicine)
Jane graduated from the University of Bristol in 2005 with distinction. Following a two year period in a small animal practice in West Yorkshire Jane completed a 12 month rotating internship at the University of Liverpool, where she developed her interest in internal medicine. In 2009 Jane returned to West Yorkshire and joined the team at Calder Vets, completing her Certificate in Small Animal Medicine the following year. Jane has been seeing referral cases since then and is interested in all aspects of internal medicine.
Outside of work Jane enjoys walking, climbing and travelling. She is also a keen baker much to the delight of the rest of the team!

Internal Medic
Ben graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2010. After spending two years in mixed practice he moved to a busy small animal hospital in Nottinghamshire where he spent the next five years. During this time he developed a keen interest in internal medicine and gained a certificate in small animal medicine in 2015. He is interested in all areas of internal medicine.
Outside work Ben enjoys climbing, running and spending time with his dog.
