We’ve transformed a lame Labrador\u2019s life following a double hip replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bailey was just eight months old when he began to be incapacitated by lameness in both his hind legs. When his condition continued to deteriorate, he was referred to us for an expert assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our orthopedic surgeon Nick Blackburn led the case and carried out Bailey\u2019s surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nick said: \u201cBailey came to Paragon as an eight-month-old with hind limb lameness affecting both legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe\u2019d been suffering from six months of age and the condition was progressive, with his exercise tolerance steadily declining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe was uncomfortable when walking and was not improving with anti-inflammatory analgesic medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe diagnosis was severe hip dysplasia. He was losing muscle on the hind limbs and manipulating his hips was painful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The extent of Bailey\u2019s problems meant that replacing both hips was the best remedy for a long-term solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added: \u201cThe decision to perform surgery was made to improve Bailey\u2019s quality of life and give him a good long-term prognosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a young dog and the implants were aimed at longevity, hopefully allowing him to return to full exercise for the long-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere were no issues and Bailey recovered well. He is now doing very well, is pain free and is even back to jumping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bailey\u2019s delighted owner Tina Kelley, from York, said: \u201cI first noticed something wrong just after he was six months old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe became very upset and was clearly in pain and at first I thought he\u2019d hurt himself playing with another dog and he\u2019d be ok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut the problem persisted so I took him to the vets who revealed his hip joints were not forming naturally and he needed replacements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cParagon were brilliant in organising the whole thing. Bailey had one hip replaced last May and the other in September and there\u2019s been a long period of rehabilitation since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe had to be kept in his crate a lot to stop him running and jumping around too soon and he was only allowed short walks and all the time on his lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBailey\u2019s making up for lost time now, though. He\u2019s running around and jumping like never before \u2013 it\u2019s a real novelty for him, it\u2019s like even he can\u2019t believe what he\u2019s able to do now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
